20CC TXX-1 Spectron: Vintage Tape Oscillator for Eurorack
The 20CC TXX-1 Spectron is a new Eurorack module that brings the sound of vintage tape-based instruments into the modular world. It was unveiled at Knobcon 2026. This dual oscillator is inspired by classic instruments like the Mellotron, Chamberlin, and Optigan. It uses a unique blend of synthesis and sampling to recreate their warbly, organic tones.
Dual Oscillator Design
The Spectron features two voices, A and B, which can work independently or together. Each voice has a volt-per-octave CV input and a gate/trigger input. The second voice is normalled to the first, simplifying patching. This design allows for smooth pitch control, as playback seamlessly transitions between recorded samples.
Timbre Shaping with FM and Sync
Unlike typical sample players, the Spectron offers two assignable timbre sections: FM and Sync. These can create subtle modulations or radical transformations, from bell-like percussion to harsh static. The controls have dedicated CV inputs with attenuvertors, and they can be assigned to either voice or both. This provides extensive sound design possibilities.
Built-in Envelope and LFO
An optional ASR envelope is built in, which can control amplitude and turn the module into two complete voices. The envelope can be routed to the timbre CV inputs, along with a built-in LFO with selectable waveshapes. This means you can create complex patches without extra modules.
Pseudo-Polyphony and Modulation
A four-voice pseudo-polyphonic mode allows overlapping notes for harmony. The modulation matrix offers multiple sources and destinations, including two dedicated CV inputs. This enables advanced patching techniques. Additionally, tape selection can be controlled via CV or triggers, supporting multi-timbral sequencing and voice hocketing.
Specifications and Availability
The module is 16 HP wide, 22 mm deep, and draws about 150mA on +12V. It includes more than 20 tape recordings from vintage instruments, with more planned after release. The Spectron is in final development, with pre-orders starting soon. The projected ship date is November or December 2026. No pricing has been announced yet.
