ATC Debuts SCS120 Pro: New Flagship 15” Active Subwoofers

ATC has officially announced the availability of two new flagship subwoofers. These are the free-standing SCS120 Pro and the flush in-wall mounting SCS120iW Pro. Designed to elevate professional monitoring systems, these units support the manufacturer’s larger mid-field and main monitors. Furthermore, they deliver exceptional low-frequency extension and expanded dynamic range. Consequently, they are well-suited for stereo, surround, and immersive formats, such as Dolby Atmos.

New Driver Technology

Both new models build upon the success of the previous 12-inch versions. However, the SCS120 Pro series features a new hand-built 15”/375 mm sub-bass driver. This component was developed and manufactured at the ATC facility in the UK. Significantly, all driver components have been precisely optimized using the latest analysis tools. The transducer combines a powerful short-coil motor system with a carbon-paper composite cone. As a result, the unit delivers deep and clean bass from 120Hz down to below 20Hz. Moreover, this performance is achieved with minimal distortion.

Design and Amplification

The design avoids complex electronic equalization. Instead, it employs a combination of transducer engineering and a larger cabinet volume. Therefore, this approach reduces phase shift and group delay. In addition, it aids the integration with partnering monitor loudspeakers. Meanwhile, both subwoofers are powered by a 300W class A/B amplifier. This amp is optimized for a fast and dynamic response.

Connectivity is also adaptable for various studio setups. For instance, it includes balanced stereo inputs and balanced full-range outputs. Additionally, there are analogue 4th order Linkwitz-Riley filters with multiple crossover options. Users can select an industry-standard 80Hz setting or a bypass setting. Similarly, a polarity switch and variable phase control allow for precise tuning.

In-Wall Solutions

The SCS120iW Pro offers specific advantages for installation. While it retains the performance attributes of the free-standing model, it features a shallower cabinet. Thus, it is optimized for flush in-wall mounting to maximize floor space. Furthermore, it uses an accompanying R1-300 Pro remote-mounted amplifier. This allows for flexible installation in a rack or machine room.
