Full Bucket Music Releases FB3, Free Kawai K3 Emulation

Full Bucket Music has released FB3, a new software instrument that simulates the classic Kawai K3/K3m synthesizer from 1986. This free plugin is available for Windows and macOS, supporting VST2, VST3, CLAP, AU, and AAX formats. It arrives as version 1.0.0 and can be downloaded directly from the developer’s website.

Core Features

FB3 replicates the original wave generator unit and includes factory sounds. It offers up to 64 voices of polyphony, which is generous for a vintage emulation. The user interface allows full editing of the K3/K3m parameters. You can also import and export SysEx and User Waves, making it easy to transfer patches.

Furthermore, the plugin supports MTS-ESP by ODDSound for dynamic micro-tuning. MIDI Learn lets you assign any parameter to a MIDI CC. The interface is resizable, except for a special “.N” version for older systems. The plugin is written in native C++ for high performance and low CPU usage.

Sound Quality and Limitations

Interestingly, the developer openly admits that FB3 “sounds nothing like the hardware” and that “especially the filters are crap.” This is a honest caveat for purists. Nevertheless, the plugin aims to capture the character of the K3, and many users may appreciate its unique tone. It is a free tool, so experimentation comes without risk.
