Meris Ottobit X: Stereo ’80s Degradation & Texture FX Pedal

Meris, a name synonymous with innovative audio effects, has introduced the Ottobit X, a new modular stereo degradation and texture FX pedal. This device aims to transport users into a highly versatile world of Lo-Fi and crushing soundscapes. Building upon the legacy of its predecessors, the Ottobit Jr. and Ottobit Sr., the Ottobit X expands its sonic capabilities with enhanced ’80s nostalgia, professional audio heritage, and advanced signal processing.

The Ottobit X is engineered to deliver a broad spectrum of sonic textures. For instance, it features an advanced bit crusher, allowing for granular control over sample rate and bit depth, ranging from 1 bit to 24 bits. Moreover, it includes three distinct filter types: Ladder, State Variable, and Otto Tron, each with adjustable resonance. This enables producers to sculpt the brightness or darkness of their sound. Furthermore, the pedal offers two ambience types, VHS Reverb and VHS Delay, designed to evoke the characteristic sounds and textures of vintage media. These elements collectively contribute to its distinct Lo-Fi and retro sonic signature.

Performance and Creative Workflow

The pedal is not merely a static effect unit; it is also a powerful tool for real-time performance. It boasts six unique glitch types, including Grain Freeze, Stutter, and two one-button loopers: Push Loop and the innovative Wikki Wikki, which simulates vinyl scratching. In addition, a tape stop effect with variable speed control further enhances its performance capabilities. The Ottobit X also incorporates five pitch types, such as Poly Chroma, Otto Tune, and Lo-Fi, alongside five modulation types like Ring Mod and Tape Mod. This array of features provides extensive creative potential for sound design and live manipulation. Consequently, users can craft evolving soundscapes or introduce abrupt sonic disruptions with ease.

Navigating these extensive features is made intuitive by the Ottobit X’s color screen-based user interface, adapted from Meris’s LVX and MercuryX pedals. This design ensures that complex parameter adjustments remain accessible. Furthermore, the expressive Hold Modifier switch offers on-the-fly control, making it ideal for dynamic performance scenarios. Connectivity is robust, featuring full stereo input and output, MIDI In and Out via standard DIN jacks or USB-C, and a dedicated expression pedal jack. Therefore, it integrates seamlessly into various studio and live setups, offering flexible control options.

Technical Specifications and Build Quality

Internally, the Ottobit X is powered by an advanced ARM processor, ensuring high-performance signal paths. It utilizes premium analog signal paths and 24-bit AD/DA conversion with 32-bit floating-point DSP. The input section features premium Analog Devices JFETs, contributing to its excellent audio fidelity. Designed and built in California, U.S.A., the pedal maintains a high standard of construction. It also offers switchable input/output headroom levels, accommodating both instrument and synthesizer/line levels. This versatility makes it suitable for a wide range of electronic music production applications. The pedal is available in Matte Black or a Limited Edition Multidimensional Pink finish.
