Schallenberg Tribal: Ancestral Percussion for Kontakt

Schallenberg Engineering has introduced Tribal – Ancestral Percussion, a new Kontakt instrument designed to capture the essence of ancient rhythmic expression. This library focuses on the fundamental connection between people, rhythm, and natural materials, aiming to deliver the raw sound of hands, sticks, wood, skin, and metal. These simple yet powerful elements have been foundational to music for millennia.

The development team meticulously recorded a diverse array of drums, brushes, shakers, chimes, and various wooden objects. Consequently, the focus was on achieving a direct sound, emphasizing strong attacks and natural resonance. The library notably features 43 distinct instruments, encompassing everything from deep low drums and resonant shaker drums to dry sticks, delicate brushes, and bright chimes. Furthermore, it includes 19 expertly crafted Multis. These Multis combine the individual instruments in innovative ways, thereby enabling the creation of layered drums, organic percussion ensembles, and intricate rhythmic textures.

Microphone Positions and Sound Design

Each instrument within Tribal offers separate Close and Room microphone positions. This allows producers significant flexibility in shaping the sound and spatial depth of their percussion. Moreover, the developers have carefully mixed and tweaked all instruments to ensure a dry, punchy, and natural sound. This characteristic sound profile helps the instruments blend seamlessly into a wide range of mixes. The objective was to provide sounds that are both authentic and immediately usable in production environments.

The instrument’s engine incorporates several advanced features designed for detailed sound manipulation. For instance, users can adjust the ADSR envelope independently for each microphone position. Similarly, individual round robins can be toggled on or off, providing precise control over sample playback variations. Producers also have complete command over key mapping, allowing them to assign specific sounds to desired keys. An alternative sample mapping option is available, where low keys trigger low dynamics and high keys trigger high dynamics, offering a different approach to expressive performance. Additionally, the engine includes delay-compensating pitching, random delay for enhanced liveliness, adjustable onset (negative track delay), and customizable output assignments, further expanding its versatility.
