Steinberg Unveils VST Live 3 with Real-Time Video Features

Steinberg has announced the immediate availability of VST Live 3, an update to its dedicated live performance system. This version introduces real-time video processing capabilities, a new monitor mixer, improved DMX integration, and additional virtual instruments.

Video and Streaming Integration
The update focuses significantly on visual production, adding a Video Director function capable of processing multiple real-time or playback video sources. A dedicated video automation track allows users to program camera switches and playback triggers to synchronize with the audio performance. VST Live 3 also features a direct connection to OBS (Open Broadcaster Software), facilitating multi-camera live streaming. This integration allows for pre-programmed scene changes without manual intervention. Steinberg recommends using its free MixKey streaming utility in conjunction with this setup to manage audio levels between VST Live and OBS.

Audio and Control Improvements
For on-stage monitoring, the new Monitor Mixer enables management of separate mixes for different performers, supporting both in-ear monitoring (IEM) and stage wedges. DMX lighting control has been integrated directly into the mixer interface. Users can now control lighting intensity, mute, and solo via dedicated faders alongside audio channels, consolidating sound and light operation into a single view. Additionally, input channels are now visible within the mixer for improved signal oversight.

Workflow and Content
To assist musicians, VST Live 3 introduces individual lyric and chord tracks. This feature allows different members of a band to view specific information on their dedicated displays—for example, backing vocalists can view only the chorus lyrics while musicians view chord progressions. The update also implements “Shared Modules,” allowing loaded plugin instances to be used globally across a project, eliminating the need to instantiate the same plugin for every song in a setlist. New sound content includes the Flux and Trip VST synthesizers and the Groove Agent SE drum plugin.
