23DSP Time Terrarium: Four Echo Habitats in One Delay Plugin

23DSP has released Time Terrarium, a new delay plugin for Windows, macOS, and Linux. It offers a unique approach by placing four distinct echo types in a virtual glass. An orb moves your signal between them. This design allows for complex, evolving delays that change character over time.

Four Habitats, Eight Species
Each corner of the glass holds one habitat. You can plant any of eight species there. These include tape (Moss), ping-pong (Water), shimmer (Crystal), reverse (Ash), melting (Frost), granular (Dust), bouncing (Pebble), and filtered (Wind). Each species has a single Character control. For instance, Moss’s Age adds wow, flutter, and saturation. Crystal’s Interval shifts the pitch up an octave or a fifth.

The Orb and Orbits
The orb determines where new input lands. You can drag it manually or set it on an orbit. Four orbit shapes are available: Circle, Figure 8, Pendulum, and Drift. These can take from half a bar to sixteen bars. With Sync enabled, the orbit follows the host’s bar position. This ensures that every cycle starts in time with your track.

Migrate and Pattern
Migrate sends each repeat to the neighboring habitat. It can move clockwise or counter-clockwise. With the default planting, a single note returns as tape, then ping-pong, then shimmer, then reverse. Pattern gives each habitat its own echo time multiple. Options include Unison, Dotted, Triplet, Cascade, and Golden. The Golden ratio spacing prevents the rhythms from lining up perfectly.

Seal and Space
Seal closes the glass. No new input enters, but the echoes inside keep circulating. This is useful for creating sustained textures. The Space section includes Bloom, a reverb that grows with the echoes. Duck lowers the echoes while you play. Width runs from mono to 200%. Low and High Cut filters shape the echoes without affecting the dry signal.

Price and Availability
Time Terrarium is available for €19. It runs as VST3, AU, and LV2 on 64-bit systems. macOS 11 or newer, Windows 10 or newer, and Linux x64 are supported. The current version is 0.9.0-rc1, a release candidate. It includes 30 presets in six groups, plus a Roll function for random starting points.
