A-2A Optical Compressor Plugin Goes Free

Astra Creative Audio has released the A-2A, a new optical compressor plugin for macOS and Windows. The tool models an optical cell with a two-stage release and programme memory. Therefore, recovery follows the material instead of a fixed time constant. This makes the A-2A especially suitable for musical dynamics control.

Compress Modes and Controls

The A-2A offers two operating modes. Compress uses a 3:1 ratio with a wide soft knee. Limit, on the other hand, applies a 12:1 ratio for peak control. Six knobs handle the rest: Peak Reduction, Gain, Mode, Mix, Emphasis and Glow. A needle meter shows 0 to 12 dB of gain reduction. Thus, you keep full visual feedback during tracking or mixing.

Furthermore, the plugin features low alias and zero latency. Measured on a test bench, it shows less than -89.8 dBc aliasing. Antialiasing uses antiderivative rather than oversampling. Consequently, there is no lookahead or delay compensation. That means you can track through it in real time. Similarly, the CPU usage is only about 1.27 percent, making it quite efficient.

Free Until 2026

The A-2A is currently free to download. This offer lasts until 14 September 2026. After that date, it will become paid at EUR 35 plus VAT. However, anyone who downloads it during the free period keeps the licence permanently. Updates are also included. So act quickly if you want this compressor at no cost.

Formats include VST3 and Audio Units on macOS (Intel and Apple Silicon) and VST3 on Windows 64-bit. The current version is 1.0.4. Notably, the installers are not Apple-notarised. As a result, macOS shows an unverified developer warning on first launch. You can clear this via System Settings > Privacy & Security. This step is straightforward for most users.
