Auburn Sounds has unveiled Psypan 2, a supercharged stereo multi-effect audio plug-in designed to handle a wide array of stereo field manipulation tasks. This new release revisits and significantly expands upon the original Psypan, offering producers an extensive toolkit for adding depth, movement, and spatialization to their mixes. The plug-in is available in both a Free Edition and a comprehensive Full Edition, catering to different user needs.

Evolving from a Classic

The journey of Psypan 2 began with the legacy GFM Psypan 1.0, a simple linear-phase binaural panner released back in 2011. Intriguingly, despite the later introduction of Panagement as a successor, many professional mixers continued to favor the original Psypan. Auburn Sounds’ analysis revealed that GFM Psypan’s strictly linear-phase operation with 64-point sinc interpolation performed exceptionally well with transients. Furthermore, certain “accidental bugs,” such as a subtle volume reduction and a temporal shift due to latency reporting, were found to positively impact the mix, making sounds pop and sit better.Consequently, Psypan 2 incorporates the original GFM Psypan algorithm, dubbed Psy-1, for users who desire strict linear-phase operation. Building upon this, moreover, the developers crafted the enhanced Psy-2 algorithm. This updated version utilizes 64-bit double precision and 128 taps, retaining the beneficial “bugs” in a tuned manner. Furthermore, Psy-2 is spectrally active with IIR filtering, which, while sacrificing strict phase-linearity, introduces hand-tuned EQ curves. These curves allow for a more precise perception of angular direction, creating a true rotational sensation in front of the listener, especially when paired with pre-reverb.

Diverse Panning Options for Every Scenario

Psypan 2 offers an impressive total of 17 pan modes in its Full Edition, ensuring that producers have a suitable option for virtually any stereo task. For binaural panning, there are five distinct modes. Alongside Psy-1 and Psy-2, the Full Edition includes P1 and P2, which are the unmodified Panagement 1 and 2 algorithms (without distance modeling), respectively. Additionally, a 2-band Binaural mode is available, designed to keep bass content centered while applying binaural effects to other frequencies.Beyond binaural processing, Psypan 2 provides three essential modes for channel balance. The Balance pan mimics traditional DAW panning, offering three selectable pan laws: Compensated -3 dB center, Compensated -4.5 dB center (found in DAWs like Logic and SSL), and Compensated -6 dB center. Also included are a Dual Pan mode and a unique Dual Stereo Rotation control. These modes primarily introduce volume changes, preserving phase integrity and avoiding delays, making them ideal for standard stereo adjustments. Many of these modes also feature a Stereo Width pre-process for immediate stereo field adjustments.

A dedicated Chorus is also included. For tonal shaping, Peak Panner and M/S Peak Panner offer Ivantsov peak EQ for L, R, M, or S signals. Finally, Doubler provides a wetter Haas effect suitable for thickening instruments, and Widener generates fake stereo using modulated allpasses.
