Kastle 2 Wave Bard: Compact Patchable Stereo Sample Player

Introduction to Kastle 2 Wave Bard

The Kastle 2 Wave Bard by Bastl Instruments is a compact, experimental stereo sample player designed for electronic music producers who enjoy exploring rhythms and riffs through modular synthesis and modulation. This device offers a patchable interface that allows users to manipulate samples creatively, making it a versatile tool for sound design and live performance.

Sample Management and Playback Features

The Wave Bard organizes samples into banks, which can be selected and sequenced using knobs or control voltages (CV) from its built-in pattern generator and low-frequency oscillator (LFO). Users can reverse sounds using the LENGTH knob, which controls a unique reversing envelope, adding dynamic variation to playback. Additionally, melodic samples can be played in quantized scales, enhancing musicality. The device includes built-in effects such as filter, delay, and chorus/flanger to further shape the sound.

Sample Loading and Editing

Samples can be loaded via a web-based app, allowing users to upload their own sounds, rhythms, and scales. Each bank holds 8 samples by default, adjustable from 3 to 32 samples in the editor, with 6 factory-loaded banks available and support for up to 32 banks. The sample length limit is 89 seconds for mono and 44 seconds for stereo at 44kHz, with options for longer durations at lower sample rates.

Modulation and Control Options

The Kastle 2 Wave Bard features extensive modulation capabilities. The PITCH knob offers a ±2 octave range, with modulation inputs for pitch, note quantization, and free pitch control. Users can define scales and adjust root notes through the web app. The SAMPLE knob selects samples, with a SHIFT button to trigger playback manually. Multiple CV inputs allow for triggering samples, cueing playback, and switching banks.

The LENGTH envelope knob adjusts decay and can reverse samples by adding attack. It includes modulation inputs and outputs for patching into other modular gear. The device also has a resonant filter with lowpass and highpass modes, a tempo generator with tap tempo and external clock input, and a pattern generator with user-programmable rhythm patterns.

Connectivity and Power

The Wave Bard supports stereo input with gain control, which can be mixed with output or processed through built-in effects. It offers stereo output capable of driving headphones up to 250 Ohm. Analog sync inputs and outputs, as well as modular I/O connections via the sync jacks, provide integration with other modular systems.

Power is supplied via USB-C for firmware updates, sample uploads, and power, or through 3x AA batteries (rechargeable or non-rechargeable), providing approximately 15-18 hours of use.
