Rhythmatic Analog Drum Machine with CR-78 Voices and Polymetric Sequencer
Rhythmatic by Sebsongs Modular is a fully featured analog drum machine designed for Eurorack systems. It offers six carefully selected analog drum voices inspired by the classic CR-78 drum machine. These voices include Bass Drum, Snare Drum, Low Conga, Rim Shot, Hi-Hat, and Cymbal. Unlike the original CR-78, Rhythmatic expands its sound design capabilities by providing adjustable tune and decay controls for the bass drum and snare drum, as well as decay control for the cymbal, allowing for more expressive and customizable drum sounds.
Sequencer and Pattern Features
The built-in sequencer supports up to 64 programmable drum patterns, each with a maximum length of 16 steps. A unique feature is that each drum voice can have its own sequence length, enabling the creation of polymetric sequences that add rhythmic complexity and variation. To help users get started quickly, Rhythmatic comes preloaded with 64 factory patterns. These include many original CR-78 patterns alongside additional pattern banks created by Sebsongs Modular, Konstantine, and Salkinitzor.
Randomization and Live Performance Controls
A standout feature of Rhythmatic is the large knob located at the top center of the module. This knob controls a random parameter that either adds or subtracts steps from the pre-programmed patterns. Turning the knob clockwise results in busier patterns, while turning it counterclockwise creates sparser rhythms. This feature is particularly useful for live performances, allowing musicians to introduce spontaneous fills and variations. Holding the shift button transforms this knob into a 4-bar loop recorder, which captures pattern changes and knob movements for playback.
Additional Performance and Connectivity Options
Rhythmatic includes mute buttons for each drum voice, enhancing its live performance capabilities. Below these buttons are jacks for each voice, which can be configured individually as either external trigger inputs or trigger outputs from the internal sequencer. This flexibility allows integration with other modular gear. The module also provides external clock and reset inputs, and both pattern and random parameters can be controlled via voltage control (CV).
Audio Outputs and Technical Specifications
Audio output A delivers a full mix of all six drum voices. When a patch cable is inserted into output B, the voices are split evenly between the two outputs, offering more routing options for mixing and processing. Rhythmatic’s compact design measures 16 HP in width and 40 mm in depth, with a current draw of +142 mA and -10 mA. It supports CV input ranges of +/- 5V and gate/trigger input voltages from +3.3 to 10V, with trigger output voltage at +3.1V.
Summary
Overall, Sebsongs Modular Rhythmatic combines classic analog drum sounds with advanced sequencing and live performance features. Its polymetric sequencing, randomization controls, and flexible I/O options make it a versatile and unique addition to the Eurorack drum module market.
