orph has introduced MONOCHORD, a novel software instrument designed for macOS and Windows. Described as a harmony workstation, chord synthesizer, multisampler, texture engine, and MIDI effect, MONOCHORD aims to streamline the process of creating complex chord-based arrangements and rich soundscapes. This VST3/AU plugin, also available as a standalone application, offers a distinctive approach to music production by allowing users to play complete, correctly voiced chords with a single key press or mouse click.

Unlike many other chord plugins, MONOCHORD emphasizes user intention over generative AI. It focuses on reducing setup complexity, enabling producers, composers, and sound artists to quickly build musical ideas without extensive music theory knowledge or cumbersome plugin chains. The instrument is rooted in the character of classic production hardware, providing sounds and textures reminiscent of vintage studio gear from the 1980s to the 2000s.

Intuitive Workflow and Sound Design

MONOCHORD simplifies the creative process significantly. For instance, pressing any single key on a MIDI controller or clicking an on-screen note triggers a full, harmonically correct chord and an accompanying soundscape. This library comprises 425 studio-quality sounds, meticulously sampled from iconic vintage analog and digital synthesizers, as well as real instruments. Notable sources include the E-MU Proteus, Korg Wavestation, Kawai K-Series, PPG Wave, Jupiter-8, Oberheim OB-X, and Yamaha DX7, among many others. In addition, the instrument boasts over 600 chord voicings, all laid out by hand to ensure musicality and authenticity, rather than being algorithmically generated.

Beyond its core sound engine, MONOCHORD integrates 15 effect engines with over 80 sub-modes. These effects, including reverbs, delays, phasers, flangers, and unique character shifters like Tape Machines and Atmosphere, are designed to sculpt the sound towards a warm, analog-leaning aesthetic. The plugin also features an arpeggiator, sequencer, and beats, further expanding its creative potential. Moreover, users can load their own recordings into the sample zones, allowing MONOCHORD to voice custom samples as full chords, enhancing its versatility.

Connectivity and Technical Specifications

A key aspect of MONOCHORD’s design is its robust MIDI routing capabilities. Every performance, encompassing chords, arpeggios, strums, humanization, and timing, is sent as MIDI output.
