SpaceBlender Reverb Plugin by Soundtoys for Evolving Ambient Effects

Introducing SpaceBlender: An Experimental Reverb Plugin

Soundtoys has launched SpaceBlender, a new reverb plugin designed to create unique and imaginative spatial effects. Drawing inspiration from ambient music pioneers who used layered tape loops and delays, SpaceBlender focuses on generating evolving, organic textures that transform sounds into dramatic swells. This plugin allows users to sculpt non-linear spaces with control over shape, density, and spectral evolution, offering a fresh approach to reverb effects.

Key Features and Controls of SpaceBlender

SpaceBlender’s algorithmic architecture provides several key controls for detailed sound shaping. The Time knob adjusts reverb length from 100 milliseconds up to a full minute, with an option to sync to the host tempo, ideal for ambient loops or gated effects. The Color control modifies the spectral evolution, enabling reverbs that become brighter or darker over time, a feature uncommon in traditional reverbs. The Texture control morphs the sound from smooth and lush to sparse and grainy, while the Mod control introduces random movement within processing layers for added richness and motion. Additionally, the Freeze function feeds the output back into itself, creating evolving ambient loops.

Interactive Visualizer and Real-Time Morphing

SpaceBlender includes a Visualizer that displays the shape and interaction of the effect with the input sound, which is especially useful for longer reverb times and slow attack shapes. Users can manipulate the reverb envelope in real time by dragging an X/Y cursor, allowing intuitive morphing between gate, reverse, decay, and bloom reverb shapes. This interactive control enhances creative possibilities and sound design flexibility.

Algorithmic Innovation and Sound Design Heritage

The plugin’s design benefits from the expertise of Soundtoys’ founder Ken Bogdanowicz and sound designer Andrew Schlesinger, who previously developed the Black Hole effect for the Eventide DSP4000. SpaceBlender’s sound draws inspiration from classic digital reverbs and hardware units such as the Ursa Major Space Station, Lexicon 224, and the Swarmatron synthesizer, blending experimental sound design with deep algorithmic craftsmanship.

Applications and Compatibility

While SpaceBlender excels in cinematic and experimental sound design, it is also suitable for everyday music production. It can add depth and dimension to vocals, guitars, synths, and other sources. The plugin supports macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows platforms, compatible with VST, VST3, AU, and AAX formats. An iLok account is required for registration.
