Thenatan TVHS Tape & CRT TV Emulator Released

Thenatan has released TVHS, a new tape transport and CRT television emulator plugin for macOS and Windows. The plugin aims to recreate the authentic sound and character of VHS tapes and the televisions they were played on.

Instead of using a fixed vintage curve, TVHS models the physics of a VHS deck and its connected television. This approach delivers a more realistic and dynamic emulation that evolves over time.

Modeled Physics for Authentic Character

Wow and flutter are generated from filtered noise rather than a looping LFO. As a result, the pitch drift never repeats, adding a unique organic feel to each playback. Similarly, dropouts fire on a genuine random process instead of a fixed grid, mimicking the unpredictability of real tape.

The plugin also reproduces the video side of the format. It includes a head-switching glitch at the real field rate, plus CRT flyback whine with mains hum. Moreover, TVHS features 10 convolution impulse responses captured from actual tape and video hardware.

Key Features of TVHS

TVHS offers 11 modeled effects, including Wobble, Saturate, Breathe, Noise, Tone, Dropout, Headswitch, Flyback, Width, Mix, and Output. Each effect can be bypassed independently, with per-preset bypass states for flexible control.

The Breathe effect models VHS Hi-Fi compander mistracking, while Dropout uses a true Poisson process with random depth and spacing. Furthermore, Headswitch and Flyback model the CRT and video side of VHS, with NTSC and PAL switching options.

In addition to the effects, TVHS includes 60 factory presets across six categories, ranging from Clean Transfer to Dead Channel. The interface is resizable and includes built-in tooltips for ease of use.

The plugin supports VST, VST3, and AU formats in 64-bit, and is native on Apple Silicon. It is available for both macOS and Windows.
