VAEMI Synterra: Bio-Interactive Soundscape Synthesizer
VAEMI has officially announced the Synterra. This new bio-interactive generative synthesizer promises to transform how musicians interact with their environment. This unique hardware device is designed to interpret changes in magnetic and electrical fields. It also engages with organic materials such as plants and fungi. Furthermore, it responds to light and human touch. Consequently, producers can craft evolving musical soundscapes directly from their surroundings. The Synterra aims to be a more comprehensive instrument compared to similar offerings on the market, facilitating deep interaction with its environment.
Environmental Interaction and Generative Synthesis
The core innovation of the Synterra lies in its ability to use its environment as a direct input. This enables musical generation. For instance, it determines its initial position by referencing the magnetic field around it. This ensures each power-on session starts with a unique environmental context. Furthermore, the device can process signals received from living organisms or other sources. It converts this data into an algorithmic arrangement. This process utilizes probability and quantizer structures. It generates different notes at varying times, establishing a robust generative synthesis framework within the unit. Users can also incorporate their own resistance through a touch-sensitive area. This makes their physical presence part of the musical patch.
Versatile Sound Engine and Connectivity
Synterra comes equipped with nine distinct synth presets, offering a broad palette of sonic characters. These presets encompass various synthesis methods, including subtractive synthesis, wavetable synthesis, resonators, and Karplus–Strong synthesis, alongside drum and noise elements. This versatility ensures a wide range of sound design possibilities. Moreover, the device supports extensive connectivity. It can transmit MIDI signals via both USB and a dedicated MIDI OUT connection, and it also receives MIDI CC data via USB. This means Synterra can seamlessly integrate with computer software, plugins, and even mobile devices. In addition, a MIDI input allows for harmonious play within existing musical compositions or group performances, enabling real-time control over scale structures.
Portability and Control
Designed for flexibility, the Synterra can operate on either batteries or USB power. This makes it an ideal companion for nature walks, outdoor creative sessions, or any environment outside a traditional studio. Onboard potentiometers provide intuitive control over internal sound output levels, as well as the amount and sensitivity of incoming signals. This allows for precise adjustments to suit different organic sources or environmental conditions. The device also features ten LED indicators, with five central LEDs illuminating based on the polyphony setting, which is adjustable between one and five voices. Users can also freely adjust the musical output’s octave range across five octaves. A sample-and-hold structure further enhances control, enabling users to synchronize generated notes with existing music or beats.Features
