Sampleson Backgrounds: Turn Words into Atmospheres

Sampleson has released Backgrounds, a new sound design tool that turns words into evolving cinematic atmospheres. The plugin runs entirely on your machine, with no cloud processing or subscriptions. You simply drag words onto a canvas and let the engine generate soundscapes.

What is Backgrounds?

Backgrounds is a local soundscape engine built on a Semantic Audio Retrieval model. It processes over 11,000 embeddings and draws from a curated bank of 22,000+ audio cells. This allows the plugin to understand how words relate to sound and produce meaningful results.

You can mix concepts like “Strings” with “Rain” or “Analog Bass” with “Thunder.” The canvas lets you arrange keywords, and each one can be regenerated individually. Finished soundscapes can be exported as WAV files or dragged directly into your DAW.

How It Works

The workflow is simple. First, you drag keywords that describe a scene onto the canvas. Then, Backgrounds starts generating evolving atmospheres. Finally, you can animate the elements by moving them around. The plugin records movements via automatable parameters or captures live audio with its built-in recorder.

Five keyword families are included: Orchestra-based, Synth-based, Bass-Rumbles, Places, and Custom. The Custom category lets you type any word, and the engine semantically matches it to sound. This makes it easy to explore unexpected combinations.
