At Superbooth 2026, Erica Synths unveiled the Bullfrog Drums, a new 7-track sampling drum machine. This innovative instrument was developed with a strong focus on music education, created in collaboration with renowned artist Richie Hawtin. Erica Synths had previously offered a preview of this device two years prior, and it is now officially available for pre-order. This release marks a significant addition to the electronic music production landscape, offering a versatile tool for both learning and performance.

The Bullfrog Drums distinguishes itself as a multi-functional instrument, operating not only as a drum machine but also as a sampler and a CV/gate sequencer. Consequently, it is optimized for users interested in learning drum programming, understanding sampling techniques, and integrating samples into various performance setups. Moreover, its sample-based voices mean it is not restricted to traditional percussion sounds. The instrument features a highly intuitive, hands-on interface, housed within Erica Synths’ distinctive aluminium enclosure. It comes with seven banks of factory samples, meticulously curated by Richie Hawtin and the Erica Synths team. In addition, it supports up to 16 banks for user samples, offering substantial creative freedom. The total sample memory is 64 MB, allowing for a good selection of sounds. For those keen on creating their own audio, the machine includes a line input for external sampling and a built-in microphone for live sampling, making it incredibly versatile. Users can also fine-tune their sounds with seven parameters for sample sound design, along with individual level controls for each voice.

Advanced Sequencing and Connectivity

The Bullfrog Drums incorporates a versatile, hands-on X0X-style sequencer, which is a popular choice among electronic music producers. This sequencer is enhanced with features such as ratchets, probabilities, and microtiming, enabling the creation of complex and dynamic rhythms. Sequences can extend up to 64 steps, providing ample space for intricate patterns. Furthermore, the instrument boasts a CV/Gate sequencer that allows for synthesizer control (1V/Oct gate), expanding its integration possibilities within a larger modular or semi-modular setup. For seamless external control and synchronization, it offers MIDI IN and MIDI OUT connectivity via both DIN and USB-C. The device also includes a stereo output and a 3.5mm headphones output for monitoring.
