Tunary REHEAT: Generative Bass & MIDI Writer Plugin

Image

Tunary Instruments has launched REHEAT, an innovative generative bass instrument designed primarily as a writing tool for electronic music producers. This plugin offers a unique approach to creating basslines, focusing on intelligent MIDI generation rather than just sound. It allows users to craft intricate bass patterns that can then be exported seamlessly to their preferred bass synthesizers.

At its core, REHEAT functions as a sophisticated MIDI writer. Users can select from ten distinct genre grooves, which include Acid, Hip Hop, House, Tech House, Trance, Techno, Drum & Bass, Dub, Disco, and Electro. Each groove brings its own tempo, length, and relationship with the kick drum. Once a groove is chosen, hitting “New LINE” prompts REHEAT to compose a fresh bassline. Moreover, the generated MIDI can be easily dragged and dropped directly onto any track within a digital audio workstation (DAW). This seamless integration ensures that producers can quickly incorporate REHEAT’s creative output into their projects, streamlining their workflow significantly.

Intelligent Bassline Generation

What truly sets REHEAT apart is its intelligent approach to bassline creation. Unlike typical random note generators, it constructs lines based on genuine chord progressions. This means that root notes align precisely with chord changes, chord tones land rhythmically on the beats, and passing notes gracefully fill the spaces in between. Furthermore, the plugin incorporates chromatic approaches into turnarounds, adding musicality and coherence to the generated patterns. In addition, REHEAT composes a single bar as a “cell,” which is then replayed against each chord. Consequently, the resulting bassline repeats and forms a memorable hook, effectively avoiding the often-random and wandering nature of many step-randomizers.

Advanced Synchronization and Flexibility

REHEAT also offers robust synchronization capabilities for enhanced production control. Producers can feed their drum bus into the plugin, allowing it to follow the external kick drum. This feature ensures precise timing, as the plugin corrects its phase to the beat without ever restarting the pattern. Furthermore, REHEAT is not confined to standard 4/4 time signatures; it meticulously follows the host DAW’s meter or can be set to a user-defined one. This flexibility makes it an incredibly versatile tool for various musical contexts and experimental compositions, providing greater creative freedom.

Auditioning and Sound Engine

While REHEAT’s primary strength lies in its MIDI generation, it includes a built-in three-layer bass engine for immediate feedback. This engine comprises a clean sub, a detuned body, and a driven top, processed through a cascaded 24dB/oct filter with saturation stages. Importantly, this synth is designed specifically for auditioning purposes, enabling users to hear the generated parts instantly. It is not intended to replace a producer’s existing, dedicated bass sound libraries or synthesizers, reinforcing its identity as a powerful writing assistant. The sound engine and composer are entirely algorithmic, meaning no AI or trained models are used.
