VGTrumpet has released VG Oboe, a new virtual instrument dedicated to the oboe. It is built on the company’s complete VG Wind Ensemble performance engine. The instrument is available as a VST/AU plugin and as a standalone application for Windows and macOS.
The VG Oboe comes with three distinct oboe sound sets: Oboe Jazz 1, Oboe Symphonic 1, and Oboe Section x4. All three are loaded simultaneously across three independent instrument layers. This setup allows players to blend and morph between the sounds in real time using a MIDI CC controller, breath controller, or wind controller.
Three Oboe Sound Sets in One Instrument
Each sound set has its own character. The jazz oboe offers a more piercing tone with a sharper attack, ideal for solo lines that need to cut through a mix. The symphonic oboe provides a rounder tone with a soft attack, suited for orchestral and cinematic writing. The four-oboe section adds weight and body, useful for modern classical and pop arrangements.
The Morph Mixer is a key feature. It allows performers to crossfade between the three layers during a single held note. This means a phrase can start as a solo jazz oboe, open into the symphonic tone, and swell into a full section without switching patches.
Performance Features and Controller Support
VG Oboe is designed for expressive playing. It supports a wide range of controllers, including wind controllers from AKAI, Roland, Yamaha, and Berglund, as well as breath controllers from TEControl, AirMotion, and MRTAudio. Standard MIDI keyboards with aftertouch and mod wheel are also supported.
The instrument includes a built-in Harmonizer for adding harmony voices in real time. A Backing Track Player allows loading WAV, AIFF, FLAC, or MP3 files directly in the interface. Other features include a Live Monitor, Quick Load Browser, and a Save Session function.
Effects and Articulations
The instrument offers articulations such as falls, squeezes, soft and accented attacks, and bends. Expressive effects include expression, attack control, vibrato, growl, and wah. Additional effects like portamento, chorus, phaser, filter, and LFO-based modulation are also included, all assignable to MIDI CC.
The sample quality is 24-bit at 44.1 kHz, and the installed library size is approximately 840 MB. No Kontakt or other sampler is required, as the instrument is self-contained.
Pricing and Availability
VG Oboe is priced at $44.95. Existing owners of any VG library can receive a 20% discount by contacting VGTrumpet directly. The instrument is available for immediate download after purchase, and updates are free.
