Hell Yes Loop Lab has released Ask the Dust, a new guitar effect plugin built around a single fixed voice: a narrow, cinematic, spring-driven electric guitar sound. Instead of offering a large collection of amplifiers, cabinets or hardware models, the plugin takes a different approach. Different guitars are pulled toward the same tonal world, while the player’s attack, vibrato, chords and phrasing remain intact.

One Voice Instead of an Amp Collection

Ask the Dust is not an amp simulator and does not try to be one. There is no amp or cabinet menu. The developers describe the sound as a family of tones associated with 1960s film scores, surf guitar and spaghetti western music. However, the plugin does not reproduce a specific recording, artist or historical rig. It explores a related vocabulary of dry attack, narrow electric guitar and audible mechanical spring.

The Spring Is Part of the Sound

A key design decision is that the spring mechanism sits inside the voice itself, rather than being a reverb pasted on afterwards. As a result, the guitar note can disappear while the mechanical spring response keeps moving. Short impulses make the mechanism jump, and even a tiny electrical crack can expose the full spring response.

Six Controls

The plugin keeps its interface deliberately minimal with six controls:

• PULL – how strongly the guitar gives way to the machine
• STRIKE – pick attack, from soft to percussive
• WIRE – how much of the spring mechanism is heard
• TRAIL – how long the springs keep moving after the note fades
• PRINT – from open and dynamic to narrow, compressed and worn
• LEVEL – final output level

Moreover, PULL is not a simple mix control. Lower settings keep more of the source guitar, whereas higher settings let pickups, instruments and input tones give way to the machine.

Ask the Dust runs locally inside your DAW with no cloud, login or subscription. The macOS package includes Universal AU and VST3, while the Windows package offers a 64-bit VST3. Both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs are supported.
