XILS-lab MemoryTone: 16-Voice Analogue Synth

XILS-lab has released MemoryTone, a new software synthesizer that recreates the ambitious architecture of the iconic Memorymoog from the early 1980s. This virtual instrument brings 16-voice polyphony and up to 18 oscillators to modern music production, along with advanced features like MPE support and a flexible effects section.

From Classic Hardware to Modern Software

MemoryTone is inspired by the Memorymoog, a six-voice analogue polyphonic synth known for its three oscillators per voice. XILS-lab aimed to capture not just the sound, but also the subtle interactions between oscillators, voices, and the filter. The result is an instrument that preserves the original’s character while expanding its possibilities.

The synth includes three oscillators per voice, each offering pulse, sawtooth, and triangle waveforms. These can be freely combined, with variable pulse width and hard sync. The mixer adds level-dependent drive and saturation, which shapes the signal before it reaches the 24 dB/octave self-oscillating ladder filter. This attention to detail helps recreate the original’s warmth and complexity.

Advanced Features for Contemporary Production

MemoryTone goes beyond simple emulation by adding modern tools. It supports MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression), allowing per-note pitch bend, aftertouch, and brightness control. The advanced arpeggiator offers mono and polyphonic modes, octave extension, and a programmable sequencer. Six integrated effects—chorus, phaser, delay, reverb, EQ, and a 3-band resonator—provide flexible routing for shaping the final sound.

Modulation options are extensive. An LFO with multiple waveforms, six assignable modulation slots, and polyphonic voice modulation are included. The synth also features velocity, aftertouch, and expression pedal controls. Additionally, the preset manager lets users filter sounds by bank, author, type, style, feeling, and project, making it easy to navigate the included library.

Availability and Pricing

MemoryTone is available as a 64-bit plugin in AAX, AU, VST2.4, and VST3 formats for macOS (10.13+) and Windows (7/8/10/11). It requires iLok protection, though computer-based authorization is supported. A time-limited demo is available for evaluation.
