A-Tom Soundware Releases KANAL42 Cassette Saturation Plugin

A-Tom Soundware KANAL42

A-Tom Soundware has introduced KANAL42, a new saturation plugin designed to capture the character, density, and feel of a driven cassette input stage. This software aims to bring the distinct analog coloration of vintage tape machines into modern digital productions.

DRIVE and TRIM Interaction

KANAL42 stands out by using the interplay between DRIVE and TRIM controls. DRIVE adjusts both the amount and character of saturation, continuously shaping asymmetry, bass response, pressure, and high-frequency content. TRIM, on the other hand, controls how hard the input is pushed into the saturation stage. By varying these two parameters, users can explore a wide range of tones—from subtle warmth to aggressive distortion.

Tone Shaping and Features

The plugin also includes Bass and Treble controls for additional tone shaping, plus a Dry/Wet knob to blend the processed signal with the original. This allows for parallel processing and precise mix integration. KANAL42 is available in VST3 and Audio Unit formats for macOS, and VST3 for Windows.

Features

  • Pure cassette input saturation with unique DRIVE/TRIM interaction
  • Continuously varying saturation character — asymmetry, bass, pressure, highs
  • Bass and Treble EQ for post-saturation tone shaping
  • Dry/Wet mix control
  • 64-bit VST3 and AU support on macOS and Windows

KANAL42 is priced at €27. A demo version is available, featuring the same audio processing but with periodic muting. The full version includes installers for both platforms and all documentation.

For producers seeking authentic tape-style saturation with flexible shaping options, KANAL42 offers a focused and intuitive solution. Its emphasis on the DRIVE/TRIM balance sets it apart from simpler distortion plugins, providing a creative tool for music production, sound design, and mixing.

Pros

  • Unique DRIVE and TRIM interaction for varied saturation character
  • Includes tone shaping EQ for final character
  • Available on macOS and Windows (VST3 and AU)

Cons

  • Only VST3 and AU formats (no AAX or VST2)
  • Demo version has periodic muting
