Empirical Labs has officially announced the release of ParaDyn, a new four-section dynamic parametric EQ plug-in designed for comprehensive spectral dynamics processing. This innovative tool expands beyond traditional equalization, offering producers a versatile solution for shaping their sound.

Derived from the core technology found in the company’s acclaimed big FrEQ, ParaDyn integrates two fully configurable dynamics modules (DYN) within its first and fourth sections. Consequently, this allows the plug-in to function not just as an equalizer but also as a powerful spectral dynamics processor. Moreover, the equalization sections support a variety of filter shapes, including distinctive “flat-top” curves. These unique curves facilitate broad boosts or cuts without introducing excessive resonance at the filter edges, ensuring a more natural and musical sound.

Advanced Dynamics and Modular Workflow

The DYN modules within ParaDyn offer three distinct operational modes, providing significant flexibility. Firstly, in Dyn EQ mode, the plug-in operates as a standard dynamic equalizer, allowing frequency-dependent gain adjustments based on signal dynamics. Secondly, the Dyn Mask mode employs a sophisticated spectral detection algorithm. This technology, similar to that found in Empirical Labs’ hardware DerrEsser, intelligently reduces processing when target frequencies are already masked by surrounding material. As a result, it helps maintain a natural frequency balance and prevents over-processing. Furthermore, the Compress mode decouples the dynamics module from the EQ band, transforming that section into a full-bandwidth compressor. This compressor features Empirical Labs’ signature knee compression, known for its musical and transparent characteristics.

The modular design of ParaDyn allows it to function effectively as a complete channel strip. Therefore, producers can utilize it for EQ, de-essing, and compression simultaneously within a single, streamlined interface. This integrated approach can significantly enhance workflow efficiency in mixing and mastering.
