Iconic ParametrEQ Plugin: Classic Detroit EQ Recreation
Iconic Instruments has announced the release of ParametrEQ, a new plugin designed to accurately recreate the original Detroit passive parametric EQ. This hardware unit was famously utilized on numerous classic Pop, R&B, and Soul tracks throughout the 1960s and 70s. Moreover, it was a custom-modified and overbuilt version of the original Langevin EQ-252A, which also appeared under the Cinema Engineering and Altec brand names, initially designed for film and broadcast applications.
The ParametrEQ plugin features seven bands, each capable of boosting or cutting by +/-8dB, mirroring the functionality of the original unit. Each of these frequencies holds musical significance, allowing users to precisely target key elements within their source tracks. A standout feature of this unit is its unique variable Q for each of the seven bands. This design allows for a broad and subtle Q at minor adjustment settings, transitioning to a much sharper Q at more extreme settings. Consequently, producers can dial in a smooth, subtle node or push the settings further for highly precise detail and presence in their mixes.
Enhanced Control and Modern Workflow Integration
Like the original modified Detroit unit, the ParametrEQ includes a +/-8dB master Gain control and an added Power switch. However, a significant advantage over the original hardware is that every parameter within the plugin is fully automatable within your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). This feature provides precise control and adjustment capabilities throughout your tracks, greatly enhancing modern production workflows. While some might initially perceive being locked into specific frequencies as a limitation, the intelligent design of this classic parametric EQ unit ensures its usability across virtually every mixing scenario where equalization is required. It offers a versatile tool for shaping sound, from subtle enhancements to more pronounced tonal adjustments.
Key Features and Availability
The ParametrEQ plugin delivers classic color adjustment, ranging from subtle to punchy depending on how far each control is pushed. Furthermore, it accurately emulates the original variable Q for each of its seven bands. The inclusion of a master Gain control and a bypass switch further adds to its utility. All parameters are fully automatable, ensuring seamless integration into contemporary production environments.
