Kaona Fractaos: Fractal Synth Voice for Eurorack
Kaona Fractaos: Exploring Fractal Synthesis
Kaona, an innovative instrument manufacturer, has introduced Fractaos, a new 32HP Eurorack module. This module stands out by employing a unique approach to sound generation: fractal synthesis. Instead of relying on traditional waveforms, Fractaos generates sound from fractal shapes, which are intricate patterns repeating at various scales. Consequently, this method produces complex, evolving, and almost organic sound textures.
Fractaos operates by establishing a dynamic interplay between a main fractal shape and a secondary fractal primitive. This primitive actively modulates, bends, and drifts the main shape, creating a rich sonic tapestry. Importantly, all calculations occur in real-time across 8 internal oscillators. As a result, the module delivers a dense and often unstable, yet consistently playable, sound material. Furthermore, users can select and shape each curve by controlling chaos and calculation depth, opening up a wide range of sonic possibilities.
Extensive Sound Shaping Capabilities
The module offers a comprehensive suite of tools for sound design. For instance, producers can manipulate the relationship between the two fractal forms through morphing, detuning, and chord generation in Drone mode. In addition, Fractaos includes controls for texture, formant extraction, and resonant filtering. It also features simplified FM modulation, LFO behavior, and envelope control. Moreover, users can apply offsets to the main parameters, allowing for detailed adjustments and unique soundscapes. Therefore, Fractaos serves as a powerful instrument for both precise tones and experimental textures.
Polyphony, Connectivity, and Presets
Fractaos is designed as a true instrument, offering both polyphonic capabilities and extensive connectivity. Specifically, it supports a 4-voice polyphonic mode accessible via both MIDI and CV inputs. Alternatively, a dedicated Drone mode keeps all 8 oscillators continuously active, creating rich, sustained sounds. A polyphonic ADSR envelope with a curve function further enhances its utility as a complete synth voice. Moreover, all custom settings can be conveniently stored in the internal presets, ensuring quick recall during live performances or studio sessions. In terms of connectivity, the module features 8 bipolar CV inputs, 4 Trigger inputs, and 4 one-volt-per-octave inputs, making it highly versatile within a modular setup. Furthermore, MIDI support includes velocity and aftertouch, enabling expressive control.
