Knif Audio has officially unveiled the Knifonium Modular FX, a brand-new 5U effect system designed for audio professionals and tube electronics enthusiasts. This system represents the culmination of extensive development, meticulously crafted to harness the full sonic potential of tubes, transformers, and inductors. Consequently, it promises a rich, analog sound character that is highly sought after in modern electronic music production and studio environments.

Dedicated Tube-Driven Architecture

The core philosophy behind the Knifonium Modular FX revolves around its dedicated tube electronics. Each module within the system is engineered to maximize the unique sonic properties of vacuum tubes. However, where space limitations or heat generation make tubes impractical, the design intelligently incorporates discrete transistors, FETs, and even IC operational amplifiers into the signal path. This hybrid approach ensures optimal performance across all functionalities. Furthermore, the selection of components is of exceptionally high quality throughout, and the entire system is built with ease of maintenance in mind, ensuring longevity and reliable operation.

Diverse Range of Effects Modules

The Knifonium Modular FX system offers a comprehensive suite of processing modules, providing a versatile toolkit for sound shaping. For instance, the Dual Mic Pre features two channels of tube microphone preamplification, complete with Lundahl input transformers and New Old Stock (NOS) tubes for pristine signal capture. Moreover, the Dual Phaser module delivers rich, modulated effects, utilizing six tubes and twelve opto-isolators across six stages of phase shift networks. It also includes an LFO with 0, 90, and 180 degrees phase shift options for channel B, expanding its sonic capabilities.

In addition, the system includes a Dual Filter Bank, which is characterized by its special saturated inductor modulated design, complemented by tube amplifiers for unique tonal shaping. For time-based effects, the BBD Delay module offers a classic bucket brigade delay sound, enhanced by tube distortion stages within its delay loop. This module also features variable anti-alias filters, ensuring maximum frequency response across the entire delay time range. Furthermore, the Spring Reverb module provides stereo spring reverb, utilizing mu-metal shielded reverb tanks to minimize hum and noise. It supports both constant current and constant voltage driving modes, all amplified by tubes.

Modulation and Utility

Beyond core effects, the Knifonium Modular FX integrates essential modulation and utility modules. The S&H+EF module combines Sample & Hold functionality with an Envelope Follower, opening up possibilities for dynamic and evolving soundscapes. A dedicated Phones module is also included, along with a robust Power Supply unit, which is critical for driving the complex tube circuitry. Overall, the system’s specifications highlight its substantial build, including a weight of 27 kg and a power consumption of approximately 250 W for a full cabinet. Its front panels are crafted from 4 mm aluminum, engraved and color-filled for durability and clear labeling.
