Leit Audio Phrotator: Free Broadband Phase Rotator Plugin

Leit Audio Phrotator

Free Phase Rotation Plugin for Mac, Windows & Linux

Leit Audio has released Phrotator, a free broadband phase rotator plugin for macOS, Windows and Linux. The tool continuously rotates the phase of an audio signal from 0 to 360 degrees across the entire frequency range. As a result, it offers far more flexibility than a simple polarity switch, which only provides 0 or 180 degrees.

Moreover, Phrotator uses FFT-based linear-phase processing and preserves magnitude across the spectrum. Therefore, you can adjust phase without changing the tonal balance or level of the signal. The internal DSP runs at 64-bit double precision, which should ensure clean results even on demanding material.

Typical Applications

Phrotator is aimed at fine-tuning phase relationships between signals. For instance, it can help align multiple microphones on the same source, such as a drum kit or a double-tracked guitar setup. In addition, it can match parallel processing chains to the dry signal, or simply serve as a creative tool for sound shaping.

Unlike EQ-based phase tricks, the plugin keeps the gain constant throughout. Furthermore, a latency-matched bypass allows clean A/B comparisons, which is useful when judging subtle phase adjustments.

Features

  • Continuous 0–360° phase rotation with 0.1° resolution
  • Broadband phase rotation across the full frequency range
  • Magnitude-transparent linear-phase processing
  • 64-bit double-precision internal DSP
  • Mono and stereo operation
  • Latency-matched bypass for clean A/B comparison
  • ~43 ms latency at 48 kHz
  • VST3 for macOS, Windows and Linux
  • Audio Unit for macOS
  • Native Apple Silicon and Intel support

Availability and Download

Phrotator is free to download and use. However, a free Leit Audio account is required. There is no trial period, subscription or in-plugin activation. The plugin ships as VST3 for macOS, Windows and Linux, and as Audio Unit for macOS.

Pros

  • Continuous 0–360° phase rotation with fine 0.1° resolution
  • Magnitude-transparent linear-phase processing preserves tone and level
  • Free with no activation, available for Windows, macOS and Linux

Cons

  • Requires a free account sign-up to download
  • ~43 ms latency makes it less suitable for real-time tracking
