Mercurial Tones has unveiled Vanguard, a new bus compression, saturation, and clipping plugin designed to offer a fresh approach to audio processing. For decades, bus compressors have largely relied on similar fixed-curve formulas. Vanguard, however, aims to break this mold by introducing a dynamic and reactive processing engine. This innovative tool promises to deliver glue, warmth, and control while adapting to the unique characteristics of the audio material.

At the core of Vanguard is the Reactive Spectral Saturation Engine (RSX). This proprietary technology continuously analyzes the incoming audio in real time. Consequently, it reshapes the harmonic curve of the saturation to precisely match the source material. For instance, RSX can effectively reduce muddiness in bass-heavy tracks. Similarly, it can tame harshness found in brighter audio sources, ensuring a consistent and optimized sound without imprinting the same color repeatedly. Users also have the option to manually override this reactive response if a fixed setting is preferred.

Furthermore, Vanguard offers three distinct compressor modes, providing versatility for various mixing scenarios. The ‘Vintage’ mode is crafted for classic glue and warmth, ideal for achieving a cohesive and analog-like feel. In contrast, the ‘Modern’ mode delivers fast and transparent control, suitable for contemporary productions requiring precision. Additionally, a dedicated ‘Bass’ mode is specifically tuned to enhance and control the low-end frequencies. This ensures that the punch and impact of transients are preserved rather than being smeared during saturation. Moreover, a parallel mix control allows users to blend in the desired amount of tube character. The plugin’s smart detection and sidechain capabilities further enhance its flexibility, featuring a sweepable high-pass filter, adjustable lookahead, and 0-100% stereo link. Automatic makeup gain streamlines the setup process, enabling the plugin to sit correctly with minimal adjustments.

Finally, Vanguard includes a comprehensive output stage with a clipper. Users can choose between ‘Soft’, ‘Hard’, and ‘Shaped’ clipping modes, all applied after the compressor. A delta-listen solo function allows for precise monitoring of the audio material being removed by the clipper, facilitating detailed adjustments. Just like the tube stage, the clipper also features a parallel mix control, offering even greater creative control over the final sound. Vanguard is available for both macOS and Windows operating systems, supporting VST3 and AU plugin formats.
