Monomachine and Machinedrum Emulators Now Free as Plugins
The Elektron Monomachine and Machinedrum have finally received free emulators. Berlin-based developer Joe Landers built them as a fork of the Gearmulator project. They run as standalone software and as a VST3 plugin inside your DAW. This release is bound to excite fans of these iconic instruments.
How the Emulation Works
The emulation runs on the Motorola DSP56303 chip, just like the original hardware. You will need the original ROM files from your own devices to use it. No links to these files are provided for legal reasons. The developer also rebuilt authentic control interfaces, including key chording, parameter locks, encoder clicks, and secondary functions. SysEx support is included, plus extensive audio routing options.

Both emulators offer a faithful recreation of the original machines. They support host audio routing into input effects and sampling functions. The VST3 version also provides multi-output for additional output pairs. The project is available for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel) and Windows.

Early Alpha Status and Limitations
This project is still in an early, experimental alpha stage. Several users report heavy CPU load, which may be problematic on older systems. However, additional developers have joined, so improvements could come quickly. The legal situation is also not entirely clear. Elektron’s EULA prohibits reverse engineering, though no legal action has been taken so far.
