Pocket Strings: Broadcast-Grade String Plugin Now Free

The Crow Hill Company Pocket Strings

The Crow Hill Company has made its popular POCKET STRINGS plug-in available for free. This move aims to bring broadcast-grade string possibilities to everyone, regardless of experience or budget. The announcement came on August 6, about a year after the initial launch.

What Is Pocket Strings?

POCKET STRINGS is a string plug-in that combines live cinematic orchestral recordings with vintage synth layers. It features a 17-piece classical string section recorded in Glasgow. The plug-in offers three refined articulations: LONG, SHORT, and PLUCK. These provide a range of expressive possibilities without requiring complex controller setups.

The plug-in includes an auto-expression system. This system automatically adjusts dynamics and timbre based on playing style. It was developed by observing how string players naturally shape notes. As a result, users can focus on playing rather than manipulating faders or wheels.

Vintage Synth Integration

The Crow Hill Company traveled to Pisa to acquire a restored Yamaha CS-80 and an ARP Solina String Ensemble. These iconic instruments can be blended seamlessly with the acoustic signal. Users can select them directly or use the signal grid to mix levels. This adds body, depth, and character to the string sound.

Additionally, the GLASS function controls tonal balance by attenuating fundamental and harmonic frequencies. This is particularly useful for four-part harmony and bass lines. The entire library draws from over 130 GB of recording sessions, refined into a single 850 MB losslessly compressed instrument.

Features and Compatibility

POCKET STRINGS is available in AAX, AU, VST, and VST3 formats. It works on macOS (Big Sur through Sequoia) and Windows 10/11. Installation requires The Crow Hill App, which is also free. The plug-in loads directly into any DAW.

Key features include:

  • Three refined techniques performed by a classical string section
  • Independent double bass player control
  • Fully blendable and matched synth layers
  • Tonal control via GLASS EQ
  • Curated algorithmic and granular reverbs
  • Composer-friendly modulation tools

Price and Availability

POCKET STRINGS is now available for free. There is no catch. The company states that this is a deliberate effort to break down barriers to entry. Co-founder Christian Henson emphasizes that quality has not been compromised. He describes it as his go-to string library for sketching and collaboration.
