Sonicware ELZ_1 core: A Compact Powerhouse

Sonicware has introduced the ELZ_1 core, a compact desktop synthesizer module that brings the full ELZ_1 sound architecture into a smaller, more portable format. This new module is designed for musicians who want to integrate the ELZ_1’s distinctive sound into their existing setups without replacing their primary gear. It offers the same 18 synth engines as the ELZ_1 play, but in a keyboard-less, desktop-friendly design.

Sound Engines and Synthesis

The ELZ_1 core packs an impressive array of synthesis methods. It includes wavetable, FM, granular, physical modeling, and more. With up to three oscillator layers per sound, you can combine different engines for complex timbres. Notably, it supports Serum wavetable import and includes 16 built-in Waldorf wavetables from the PPG and Microwave. This flexibility makes it a versatile tool for sound designers.

Additionally, the synth features 49 effects, ranging from essential ones to granular and cassette tape simulators. You can route these effects across four modules—INSERT, EFX I, EFX II, and MASTER—allowing up to four simultaneous effects. This extensive effect section adds depth and character to any patch.

Performance and Connectivity

For live performance, the ELZ_1 core offers three Performance Macros, each controlling up to three parameters. This enables real-time tweaking of oscillators, filters, and effects with a single move. The redesigned Edit UI simplifies deeper programming, while the patch browser includes tag and shortcut functions for quick access.

Connectivity is a strong point. The module features a USB HOST port for connecting USB MIDI controllers directly, with bus power for those controllers. It also has 5-pin MIDI In, 3.5mm stereo input, and dual 1/4-inch line outputs. The built-in 128-step sequencer with 128 patterns allows for standalone operation without a computer.

Presets and Sequencer

The ELZ_1 core includes 256 performance-ready presets, plus 512 sound memories. The 128-step sequencer supports step and real-time recording, along with non-quantized MicroTiming for expressive performances. It also includes a 2.4-inch full-color LCD and 25 full-color LED buttons for intuitive control.
