TerminalVST has introduced “Instant,” a new drum sequencer plugin now available for free. This tool is designed to streamline the process of adding percussion to electronic music tracks. It supports both macOS and Windows operating systems, with VST3 and AU formats. Developed by Patrik Skoog, Instant aims to provide both immediate usability and deeper creative control for producers. Upon loading, Instant distinguishes itself by immediately playing a default drum pattern. This feature eliminates the need for initial setup or extensive sample hunting, allowing users to quickly integrate rhythms into their projects. Users can easily switch between different sound categories and select from a curated factory sample library. Furthermore, the plugin supports user-loaded samples; simply dropping WAV or AIFF files into the designated folders makes them instantly available, sorted and ready for use alongside the factory sounds. Moreover, the plugin incorporates shuffle/swing controls with per-step overrides and micro-timing nudges, allowing for nuanced rhythmic variations. Every step can hold unique values for parameters such as pitch, high-pass and low-pass filters, shape envelope, shuffle, reverse, and micro-timing. These step automations are saved with the session and visually reflected during playback. Additionally, automation can be recorded in real-time by simply turning knobs while a pattern plays, offering dynamic control.

Instant is engineered for an efficient workflow. When a drum loop is complete, users can directly drag the audio from the plugin interface onto their DAW timeline. The plugin automatically renders the loop at the project’s exact BPM and pattern length, ensuring a frame-perfect and loop-perfect integration. This process bypasses traditional resampling, export dialogs, and manual file management, thus simplifying the production pipeline. The exported audio includes all applied parameter locks, filters, envelope settings, and shuffle, ensuring that every tweak is preserved.
