Thenatan Releases GRRR Beat-Reactive Growl Designer Plugin

Thenatan has introduced GRRR, a new beat-reactive growl designer plugin for macOS and Windows. Instead of applying a static distortion curve, GRRR listens to the incoming signal and drives four processing engines in sync with its transients. As a result, it snarls on the hits and slurrs back down between them. This makes it possible to turn a flat 808, a lifeless vocal, or a plain loop into a full growl using a beat-detector rather than a fixed envelope shape.

Four Beat-Reactive Engines

GRRR features four distinct engines, each controlled by a single knob. The TRASH engine combines wavefolding, decimation, and ring-modulation. TALK uses a vowel-based formant mouth that accelerates up to 4x on transients before slurring back down. WUB introduces a resonant wobble filter, while SCREECH delivers a metallic riddim laser. Consequently, users can shape aggressive textures with minimal effort.

In addition, the master section includes SUB for octave-down weight and DENSE for global drive, sweep, resonance, and gating scaling. Each engine also has its own Mix and Bypass controls, allowing instant A/B comparisons. Moreover, GRRR comes with over 20 factory presets covering bass growls, vocal monsters, drum destruction, and riddim lasers.

Performance and Compatibility

GRRR is designed for zero-latency and ultra-low CPU usage. It supports VST, VST3, and AU formats in 64-bit, including native Apple Silicon. Activation uses serial numbers, so no iLok or dongle is required. This makes it accessible for producers who want a quick, responsive tool for sound design.
