Trumsynt-16 Drum Synth Adds Percussion Sequencing to VST/AU

Liljeholmen DSP has released Trumsynt-16, a single-voice drum synthesizer and percussion sequencer for macOS and Windows. The plugin combines two oscillators, noise and click layers, filters, drive, six decay envelopes, and four per-step modulation lanes. It is designed to run one instance per drum voice.

Engine and Sound Design

The sound engine starts with two oscillators. VCO 1 includes a METAL mode with six detuned squares at fixed non-harmonic ratios. This creates metallic percussion without relying on samples. The oscillator path runs at 8x oversampling with FIR decimation, PolyBLEP square, and a band-limited triangle. Fast pitch sweeps stay clean as a result.

Noise and click layers feed a switchable low-pass/high-pass filter section. Pre/post drive adds extra character. Six independent decay envelopes shape each voice. Modulation destinations include pitch, filter, FM, decays, drive, pan, and UNTZ. The routing is fixed, so no patchbay is needed.

Sequencer and Modulation

Trumsynt-16 includes a 16-step sequencer with four lanes: PITCH, VELOCITY, MOD A, and MOD B. Two 8-step pages can run alone or chain to 16 steps. Each lane has its own length. Consequently, the lanes drift against each other before the pattern loops. This makes evolving percussion patterns easy to create.

The plugin also includes an LFO. MOD A, MOD B, and the LFO reach fixed destinations across the main sound parameters. Per-step pitch and velocity are available, too. The manual lists parameter ranges, defaults, modulation destinations, preset paths, and the MIDI CC map.

System Requirements and Formats

Trumsynt-16 is available as AU and VST3 on macOS 12 or later. It is Universal, so it runs on Apple Silicon and Intel. A Windows 11 64-bit VST3 beta is also available. The Windows build is not code-signed yet. Therefore, Windows may show a publisher warning. Users can verify the SHA-256 sum published beside the download instead.

The plugin is efficient. On a 2021 M1 Pro, one instance reads 6% in Ableton Live. Twenty instances read 24%, and fifty read 50%.

👍 Pros

  • Single-voice drum synth with 8x oversampled oscillators for clean pitch sweeps
  • 16-step sequencer with four independent modulation lanes
  • Runs efficiently even with many instances in a DAW

👎 Cons

  • Windows version is currently a beta and not code-signed
  • One instance per drum voice means multi-drum setups require multiple plugin instances
