UJAM has officially launched Retrocraft, a new multi-effect plugin. It is designed to infuse instruments and vocals with rich analog-style character and lo-fi textures. Following the company’s vocal processor, Voxcraft, Retrocraft applies a similar philosophy. It consolidates a comprehensive processing chain into a single, intuitive interface. This innovative plugin aims to simplify achieving vintage coloration, degradation, and saturation. Traditionally, this requires stacking multiple individual processors. Therefore, producers can now attain desired sonic results more efficiently.
Streamlined Workflow and Core Engine
The primary premise behind Retrocraft addresses a common workflow challenge in music production. Often, achieving specific saturation, degradation, and vintage coloration necessitates meticulous building of complex signal chains. Retrocraft streamlines this process. It integrates amp-style coloration, vintage playback emulation, speaker modeling, modulation, instability, and ambience into one unified environment. This integration allows producers to craft intricate effects without manual overhead. Furthermore, the plugin’s character engine draws inspiration from classic analog equipment and iconic playback devices. For example, it adeptly covers tape-style coloration and distinct vinyl textures. Moreover, it includes megaphone and telephone-speaker effects, alongside degraded radio sounds. Each processing stage within this engine can be combined and adjusted independently. This enables users to transition seamlessly from subtle warmth to heavily degraded, experimental textures. Importantly, these adjustments are made without ever leaving the plugin interface. This modularity is a key differentiator, offering greater flexibility compared to fixed-character saturators.
Creative Modules and Preset Content
Beyond its core character engine, Retrocraft features six dedicated creative effects modules. These include LoFi, Modulation, Instability, Delay, Reverb, and Chop. These modules significantly expand the plugin’s capabilities beyond simple coloration. They introduce elements of movement and spatial ambience. Notably, Instability and Chop are particularly geared towards rhythmic and glitch-oriented sound design. They offer tools for creative manipulation rather than just mastering-style polish. Moreover, the plugin comes equipped with a substantial preset library. This includes 100 production-ready presets, specifically tailored for instruments and vocals, providing immediate inspiration. Additionally, 56 basic presets are included. These demonstrate individual effect algorithms in isolation, serving as an excellent learning resource. They help users understand each stage before combining them. For those seeking fresh sonic ideas, a built-in “Surprise” function generates new effect combinations on demand. This feature is intended as a creative starting point for new sounds, encouraging exploration and innovation.
Peter Gorges, co-founder of UJAM, commented on the release: “We’re big fans of the many character-processing tools available today, but we felt there was room for a more integrated solution that combines these types of effects with important additions like modulation and ambience processing. Instead of tediously building effect chains, Retrocraft lets you start with a complex effect combination you like and easily tweak it to make it your own.”
Retrocraft is particularly aimed at producers working in beat-driven, vocal, or electronic music styles. These users often require vintage character and texture quickly. It also offers the flexibility to push individual stages further for more dedicated and experimental sound design.
