EHX Adrian Belew Echoflanger Adds Dual Modes to Classic BBD

Electro-Harmonix has released the Adrian Belew Echoflanger, a hardware pedal that revives a rare bucket-brigade device from the late 1970s. This new version expands on the original with additional modes and modern conveniences. The pedal is closely tied to Belew’s studio and live work with King Crimson, David Bowie, and Talking Heads.

A Classic Reborn with Dual-Mode Additions

The original Echoflanger offered four core routing options: Filter Matrix, Flange, Chorus, and Slap Back. This reissue preserves those sounds. Furthermore, it introduces two dual-mode operations: Chorus + Flange and Slap Back + Filter Matrix. These positions replicate the physical “in-between” switch states that Belew exploited on his vintage units. As a result, players can achieve radical comb-filtering and complex pitch modulation. The analog BBD circuit ensures authentic vintage character.

Comprehensive Control Set

Front-panel controls include Rate (LFO speed), Width (LFO depth), Feedback (resonance to self-oscillation), and Tune (delay time bias). A master Volume potentiometer compensates for the insertion gain loss common to early analog designs. Additionally, a rear-panel Blend switch enables 100% wet output for auxiliary studio routing. The pedal also features discrete stereo outputs, which allow for expansive spatial modulation. Mechanical true-bypass switching preserves your dry signal when the effect is disengaged.

Power and Build

The unit runs on a 9V DC power supply, which is included. It draws only 40 mA. However, battery operation is not supported. The housing measures 5.75″ x 4.75″ x 2.5″ and weighs 1.6 lbs. This makes it a substantial desktop presence, yet still pedalboard-friendly for many setups. The price is set at $239.
