Reason Free: Free Rack Plugin & DAW with 15 Devices

Reason Studios has released Reason Free, a free version of its music production platform. The software is available to everyone as of now. According to the company, there is no trial period, no watermark, and no expiry date. Users can download it, keep it, and use it without any cost.

The Reason Rack as a Free Plugin

Reason Free works in two ways. First, it runs as a VST3, AU, or AAX plugin inside any compatible DAW, such as Ableton Live, Logic Pro, or Pro Tools. Second, it also functions as a standalone DAW with 16 audio and/or MIDI tracks. In both cases, the same set of 15 Devices is included. As a result, producers can extend the sonic palette of their existing setup without spending money.

The 15 Included Devices

The Device selection covers synthesis, drums, effects, and modulation. Europa, the spectral synthesizer, offers hundreds of patches and a wide tonal range. In addition, the Monotone Bass Synthesizer delivers old-school bass sounds. Kong Drum Designer and the ID8 Instrument Device complete the instrument lineup. Therefore, the package spans from bread-and-butter sounds to more unusual textures. A Scales & Chords Player MIDI effect is also on board to spark new ideas.

Effects and Modular Routing

On the effects side, Reason Free includes Scream 4, The Echo, RV7000 MKII, Audiomatic, and the MClass Maximizer. These units can add instant character to any instrument in the Rack. Moreover, because the Rack works as a plugin, users can also process sounds from other DAWs. For instance, routing a third-party synth through Scream 4 is a quick way to add grit. Furthermore, Pulsar Dual LFO and Spider Audio/CV enable the signature cable-based modulation system. The Combinator then combines multiple Devices into a single patch with custom macro controls.

Expandable with Rack Extensions

Reason Free is not a closed system. It supports Rack Extensions, which are add-on Devices available in the Reason Studios shop. In addition, users can subscribe to Reason+ or buy a full Reason license to unlock more Devices. Consequently, the free version can grow alongside your needs.
