Independent developer Remi Blaze has officially released Purix, a new dynamic resonance removal plugin designed specifically for macOS users. This innovative tool aims to address common mixing challenges such as harsh peaks, muddy buildup, and boxy resonances that can often make a mix sound fatiguing. Purix is available as a free download, making professional-grade dynamic EQ capabilities accessible to a wider range of electronic music producers.

Unlike traditional fixed EQ cuts, which can dull the source audio by constantly removing frequencies, Purix operates dynamically. It analyzes incoming audio in real time using advanced FFT-based spectral detection. Consequently, it identifies problematic resonances precisely when they occur and applies fast, per-bin dynamic gain reduction. Furthermore, the reduction is released the instant the resonance subsides, ensuring transparent correction without permanently altering the source tone. This dynamic approach ensures that corrections are applied only when needed, preserving the integrity and vitality of the original sound.

Advanced Spectral Processing

The core of Purix lies in its sophisticated spectral processing engine. For instance, it utilizes an overlap-add FFT engine with 75% overlap and Hann windowing, which contributes to smooth spectral processing. Users can adjust the FFT resolution (1024, 2048, or 4096 samples) via the Quality control, allowing for a balance between processing detail and latency. Moreover, the plugin features per-bin dynamic reduction with independent attack, hold, and release smoothing on every frequency bin. This is measured against a rolling time-average and local spectral average. Additionally, an 8-frame temporal smoothing mechanism helps steady detection and prevents false triggers from transient content, while parabolic peak interpolation ensures sub-bin frequency accuracy for resonance location.

Versatile Processing Modes and Smart Learning

Purix offers five distinct processing modes, each tailored for specific applications. These include ‘Clean’ for general broadband correction, ‘Vocal’ for targeting sibilance and vocal harshness, ‘Drum’ for addressing boxiness and ring on percussion, and ‘Master’ for a gentle profile suitable for mix bus and mastering duties. Furthermore, the ‘Harmonic’ mode is particularly noteworthy, as it employs Yin pitch detection to place suppression between harmonics, and even accepts MIDI Pitch Override for exact tracking. For users unsure where to begin, the plugin incorporates a one-click ‘Learn’ system. This feature conducts a 5-second forensic analysis of the audio, subsequently setting Depth, Sensitivity, mode, and band automatically, significantly streamlining the setup process. The system also includes ‘Punch’ to deprioritize sub-100 Hz and above 12 kHz, ‘Aura’ to emphasize the 800 Hz–8 kHz band, and ‘Final’ for a conservative master bus profile.
