SonicLAB has released PROTEAN v2, a significant update to its fluid dynamics-based synthesizer. The new version brings performance improvements and a new ambisonic export feature.

Fluid Dynamics Synthesis Meets Version 2

PROTEAN merges fluid dynamic simulation with advanced sound synthesis algorithms. It creates a shape-shifting audiovisual synthesis engine where fluid particle interactions generate metamorphosing sonic textures. Version 2 refines this core experience.

The audio engine now uses less processing power. It handles silent voices more efficiently and remains stable during preset changes. This results in smoother preset changes, voice resets, gain movement, and spatial panning. There are fewer sudden level changes.

Pitch and envelope timing remain accurate with FM synthesis. Modulation, pitch variation, and the separation between emitters A and B have also been improved.

New Ambisonic Export Capabilities

One of the standout additions is the ability to create a 16-channel third-order AmbiX render export. This works alongside the normal stereo export. The Ambisonic file uses ACN channel order, SN3D normalization, and 32-bit floating-point audio. Each particle is positioned using its full 3D location.

This ambisonic support makes PROTEAN v2 a valuable tool for spatial audio productions. It allows sound designers to create immersive environments directly from the synthesis engine.

Pricing and Availability

PROTEAN v2 is a free upgrade for existing PROTEAN users. New users can purchase it for £115 at the SonicLAB webshop. It comes with OS X (universal) and Windows versions. The minimum CPU requirement is Apple M1 or equivalent. The bundle also includes the Protean Remote control VST3/AU utility.
