VANNES Devices Unveils OBSIDIAN Semi-Modular Analog Synthesizer

VANNES Devices, a company dedicated to designing high-quality synthesizers, has introduced OBSIDIAN, a new semi-modular analog synthesizer. This instrument is designed for deep sound exploration, drawing inspiration from various synthesis techniques. Notably, OBSIDIAN aims to bridge elements often associated with both East and West Coast synthesis philosophies, offering a unique sonic palette to artists and sound designers. The development of OBSIDIAN has been a meticulous process, with the instrument now nearing its final form as a prototype.

Bridging Synthesis Philosophies

The core of OBSIDIAN’s sound lies in its distinctive analog circuitry. It combines different synthesis techniques, thereby creating expansive possibilities for creative sound design and musical composition. For instance, the oscillator section clearly takes a West-coast approach, featuring waveshaping, wavefolding, and cross-modulation capabilities. Furthermore, it includes a sub-oscillator, which is ideal for crafting thick, foundational sounds. This combination ensures a rich harmonic spectrum and versatile sound generation.

Flexible Filtering and Modulation

OBSIDIAN features a robust voltage-controlled filter (VCF) section. It includes a two-channel mixer with optional external inputs, enhancing its routing flexibility. The filter itself is multi-mode, offering low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass options. Moreover, users can continuously modulate between these filter modes, allowing for dynamic timbral shifts. The VCF also provides voltage-controlled cutoff and resonance, along with bipolar envelope modulation, ensuring expressive control over the sound’s character. In addition, a voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA) with dedicated CV inputs further refines the signal path.

Envelopes, LFOs, and Delay

The synthesizer is equipped with two voltage-controlled envelope generators: a classic ADSR and an AD(R) type. Both envelopes feature gate and velocity inputs, alongside voltage-controlled slew rates and levels, which offer precise control over their contours. An inverted output adds further modulation possibilities. For dynamic movement, OBSIDIAN incorporates a versatile LFO with saw, ramp, sine, pulse, and random outputs. Its frequency range spans from 0.01 Hz up to 100 Hz. Importantly, the LFO can be synchronized to various clock sources, including tap tempo, external (Eurorack) clock, and MIDI clock, with rhythmical clock divisions available. Additionally, a tape-style digital delay is integrated, offering voltage-controlled time and feedback, and also featuring clock synchronization and rhythmical divisions.

Integrated Sequencer for Creative Flow

OBSIDIAN also includes a West-coast style five-step sequencer. This sequencer allows for selectable 4 or 5-step sequences and features external and manual reset options. Like the LFO and delay, it can be synchronized to tap tempo, external Eurorack clock, and MIDI clock. Most importantly, the sequencer is patchable, meaning its output can be routed to the oscillators, filter, and virtually any other CV destination within the synthesizer, facilitating complex and evolving sequences.

Development and Availability

Vannes Engineering, founded in 2017, is the force behind VANNES Devices. Co-Founder Koen, formerly of Majella Audio, has been instrumental in this project. OBSIDIAN represents the company’s first fully self-made instrument. While currently showcased as a prototype, the developers are actively working on final revisions to the printed circuit board, enclosure, and embedded software. Therefore, the sound, look, and feel are expected to further improve before its official release.
