Vellum Pro Reverb Adds Frequency-Selective Ducking

CarbonDSP has released Vellum Pro, an algorithmic reverb aimed at solving a common mixing problem: keeping a lead vocal or instrument clear without losing the sense of space. The plugin is now available for Windows as a VST3 effect and standalone application.
How Vellum Pro Works
Traditional ducking compressors lower the entire reverb level whenever the source plays. That keeps the mix clean but often makes the space disappear. Vellum Pro takes a different approach. It analyzes the audio in real time and only reduces the specific frequencies that clash with the source track. As a result, the vocal cuts through clearly while the reverb stays wide and immersive.
In addition, the plugin includes a detector that recognizes harsh consonants like “P” or “S” sounds. Instead of pumping the whole reverb when these sharp sounds occur, Vellum Pro recovers very quickly. This keeps the vocal smooth and upfront without unnatural breathing.
Performance and Control
Vellum Pro is optimized for modern sessions. It uses less than 1% of one CPU core at typical settings and introduces zero latency by hiding its processing inside the reverb’s natural pre-delay. Four spaces (Room, Plate, Hall, and Air) set the character, while seven source voicings tune the controls for different material types. You can also let the plugin analyze your audio and suggest a voicing, though it never switches automatically.
One standout feature is the ability to draw the decay time across six frequency bands, from 60 Hz to 12 kHz. This works like an EQ but for reverb tail length. You can also unlink room size from decay length, letting you put a track in a massive-sounding room with a short tail. Additionally, Vellum Pro can match a real space by loading an impulse response and adjusting its parameters to approximate that sound.
Vellum Pro comes with 76 mix-ready presets covering lead vocal, backing and doubles, spoken word, instruments, and creative effects. A showcase set highlights each Pro feature. The free Vellum plugin remains available for vocal-focused tasks, but Vellum Pro aims to be the only reverb you need for a full session.
