VSL Synchron Harpsichord: Authentic Blanchet Sound

Vienna Symphonic Library (VSL) has officially released Synchron Harpsichord, a new virtual instrument designed to bring the distinct sound of an 18th-century French harpsichord to digital audio workstations. This meticulously sampled library captures the essence of a double-manual harpsichord crafted by the renowned Parisian maker François-Etienne Blanchet (1695–1761). Furthermore, the instrument used for this collection is a faithful recreation built by Neupert, ensuring historical accuracy and sonic integrity. Recorded within the controlled acoustics of Synchron Stage Vienna’s Stage B, the library aims to provide producers and composers with an authentic and versatile harpsichord experience.
The development of Synchron Harpsichord focused on replicating the specific mechanical and acoustic properties characteristic of the French harpsichord tradition. Consequently, VSL sampled each stop individually and in combination across both manuals. This comprehensive approach ensures that users can access the full timbral range of the instrument, including its traditional disposition of two 8′ stops and one 4′ stop. Moreover, a notable inclusion is the “lute stop,” which employs a leather-clad rail to dampen the strings. This technique produces a unique pizzicato-like texture with a shortened decay, adding another layer of expressive possibility to the library.
Advanced Sampling for Realistic Performance
To achieve an authentic performance, VSL implemented advanced recording techniques. The process utilized a multi-microphone setup, offering users significant control over the ambient perspective. This flexibility allows for seamless integration into various mixes, whether for solo performances or ensemble contexts. Because a harpsichord’s plectra pluck strings at a consistent force, the instrument typically does not respond to velocity variations in volume or timbre. To address this within a modern production workflow, VSL meticulously sampled multiple repetitions for every note. This technique effectively eliminates the common “machine-gun effect,” thereby ensuring natural variation and realism during rapid passages.
Furthermore, the library includes specific samples for the release sounds of each stop and combination. These mechanical noises, which include the plectrum and jack returning to their resting positions, are crucial for an authentic recreation of the harpsichord’s inherent rhythmic feel and character. Therefore, every detail has been considered to deliver a truly expressive and historically accurate virtual instrument. The Synchron Harpsichord runs natively within the free Vienna Synchron Player, offering seamless integration and real-time stop switching capabilities, along with optional velocity-to-volume mapping for enhanced playability.
